Resolving Product Categorization in Amazon Listings
Optimizing Category Placement for Improved Discoverability and Sales

Overview
A client approached CaptenAmz with an issue related to product categorization and parent listing organization. Despite having three related listings grouped under the same parent on the backend, they were appearing separately on the frontend. This caused inconsistencies in visibility and customer experience. Our team identified the issue and implemented a structured solution to properly align these listings.
PROBLEMS

Listings Appearing Separately on the Frontend
Although the three listings were grouped under the same parent listing, they were not showing together on the Amazon frontend, making it difficult for customers to see them as related products.

Incorrect Category Placement
Incorrect Category Placement impacted discoverability and customer navigation since these products should have been under the same parent listing and category. This fragmentation likely reduced visibility in relevant searches and created confusion for potential buyers.

Incorrect Category Placement
Upon investigation, we discovered that the listings were placed in different categories, causing inconsistency across the catalog. One listing was categorized under soap, another under bath, and the third under shampoo.

Amazon's Category Update Tool Was Ineffective
When we attempted to fix the category issue using Amazon’s category update tool, it did not work, preventing a quick resolution.
ACTIONS
The CaptenAMZ team developed a structured approach to resolve variation issues, correct product categorization, and properly merge parent-child listings, ensuring better visibility and a seamless shopping experience.
Solution Implemented
Category Check & Initial Update Attempt
We first reviewed the assigned categories for each listing and attempted to update them using Amazon’s category update tool, but it failed to reflect the necessary changes.
Direct Contact with Amazon Seller Support
Since the tool was ineffective, we escalated the issue to Amazon Seller Support. After a 20-25 minute call, we successfully convinced Amazon to update the categories manually from their backend.
Waiting Period & Verification
We allowed 24 hours for the backend updates to take effect, ensuring Amazon's system had processed the changes before proceeding with the next steps.
Deleting the Old Parent Listing
To fully correct the issue, we deleted the existing parent listing that contained misaligned categories, ensuring no residual errors would affect the update.
Uploading a New Parent Listing with Correct Categories
Using a flat file upload, we created a new parent listing with the proper category structure, aligning all three listings under the correct category.
Improved Visibility & Customer Experience
After the fix, the listings were now correctly grouped under a single parent category, enhancing customer navigation and improving sales potential. The products became easier to manage, and their visibility across Amazon’s platform significantly improved.
