Resolving a Compliance Issue on Amazon

Ensuring Compliance and Fixing Listing Issues on Amazon

Overview

Compliance issues on Amazon can lead to unexpected listing removals, requiring sellers to navigate strict platform policies. CaptenAmz recently faced a challenge where one of our jewelry products was misclassified as children’s jewelry, triggering compliance requirements such as a Children’s Product Certificate (CPC). However, our product was designed for adults. This case study outlines how we investigated and resolved this issue efficiently.

PROBLEMS

Misclassification as Children's Jewelry

Amazon flagged the listing as a children’s product, requiring a CPC test report for compliance. Since the jewelry was intended for adults, this unexpected classification posed a major challenge.

Initial Test Report Rejection

To comply, we contacted the supplier and obtained a test report, but Amazon rejected it due to missing key details, such as specific attributes and a relevant date range.

Amazon’s Compliance Requirements

Despite clarifying that the product was for adults, Amazon insisted on receiving a CPC test report before reinstating the listing, causing delays in sales.

Unnecessary Expense for Additional Testing

The supplier offered to generate a new report for $150, but since we knew our product wasn’t a children’s item, we sought alternative solutions to avoid unnecessary costs.

ACTIONS

The CaptenAMZ team developed a structured approach to resolve variation issues, correct product categorization, and properly merge parent-child listings, ensuring better visibility and a seamless shopping experience.

Solution Implemented

Contacting Amazon Seller Support

We reached out to Amazon Seller Support to explain that our product was an adult jewelry item, not children’s jewelry. The support team suggested reviewing our listing to identify any attributes that might have triggered the misclassification.

Investigating the Root Cause

We conducted a detailed review of our listing and identified the issue. The word “girls” in the product title was likely causing Amazon’s algorithm to classify the item as children’s jewelry.

Updating the Product Title & Attributes

To correct the issue, we replaced the word “girls” with a more neutral term, ensuring it aligned with adult jewelry. Additionally, we double-checked the product category to confirm it was correctly listed under adult jewelry.

Submitting the Updated Listing for Review

After making the necessary updates, we resubmitted the listing for Amazon’s review, ensuring the product met all compliance standards without needing additional certifications.

Monitoring & Follow-Up

We closely monitored the listing and remained in contact with Seller Support to expedite the approval process and ensure the issue was permanently resolved.
